In which places do you think mobile phones should not be used?
I'd say there are a handful of settings where phones really have no business being out, and the obvious ones for me are hospitals, places of worship, and anywhere behind the wheel. It mostly comes down to respect and safety — texting while driving, for instance, is basically gambling with someone's life, and scrolling through a funeral or a lecture is just plain rude. I'd also throw in the dinner table at home, honestly, because that's the one time families actually get to talk face to face. That said, I'm not one of those people who wants phones banned everywhere; it's more about reading the room and knowing when to put the thing away.
At what age do you think children should be allowed to use mobile phones?
Personally, I think somewhere around eleven or twelve is the sweet spot, roughly when kids start secondary school and begin travelling on their own. At that point a phone stops being a toy and becomes a genuine safety net — being able to text your mum that you missed the bus is worth a lot. That said, I'd draw a firm line between a phone and a smartphone with unlimited internet; a basic model for calls and messages is one thing, but handing a nine-year-old a device with full social media access is asking for trouble. My cousin gave her son a locked-down phone at ten with no apps whatsoever, and honestly that struck me as the perfect middle ground.
How have mobile phones changed the way people communicate in daily life?
They've completely transformed it, and I'd argue the biggest shift is that communication has become instant and constant rather than something you set aside time for. Twenty years ago you'd write a letter or wait to get home to make a call, whereas now we fire off messages, voice notes and memes throughout the day almost without thinking. The flip side, though, is that a lot of our exchanges have become shorter and shallower — we swap quick texts instead of having proper conversations. I notice it with my own friends: we're technically in touch every single day, yet we can go months without an actual heart-to-heart, which is a bit of a paradox when you think about it.
Do you think people rely too much on mobile phones nowadays? Why or why not?
Honestly, yes, I think our dependence has tipped over into something slightly unhealthy for a lot of us. The telling sign is how helpless people become the moment their battery dies — they can't navigate, can't split a bill, can't even remember a phone number, because the device has quietly outsourced all of that for us. I'll admit I'm guilty of it myself; I once got hopelessly lost in a new city simply because my phone died, and I realised I'd completely forgotten how to just ask a stranger for directions. To be fair, it's not all bad — these are genuinely useful tools — but there's a real difference between using a phone and being unable to function without one.
What positive and negative impact do mobile phones have on friendship?
I think phones are a real double-edged sword when it comes to friendship. On the plus side, they let you keep bonds alive across huge distances — I've got a close friend who emigrated to Canada, and thanks to daily messages and video calls it genuinely feels like she never left. The downside, though, is that they can breed a kind of lazy, low-effort friendship where liking someone's photo starts to feel like you've actually put in the effort of staying close. There's also the sad irony of friends sitting together in a café, each glued to their own screen, physically present but mentally miles away. So on balance I'd say phones are brilliant for maintaining friendships but pretty poor at deepening them — that part still needs real, undivided attention.
