The home I have in mind is my grandparents' house, in a farming village about three hours' drive from where I live.

It's an old single-storey house with thick walls, a tiled roof and a wide veranda running along the front. Inside it's quite dark and cool, even in the middle of summer, and the furniture hasn't changed in decades — heavy wooden chairs, a cabinet full of family photographs, a clock that chimes every hour. Out the back there's a yard with fruit trees, a few chickens and a well that still works.

I love going there because it slows me right down. There's no rush to be anywhere, and the days follow a simple pattern: up early, a long breakfast on the veranda, a nap after lunch, neighbours dropping in towards evening. My grandmother cooks on a wood stove, and everything tastes better for it. After a weekend there I always feel as though I've had a proper rest.

All the same, I couldn't live there. The nearest town with a decent hospital or a supermarket is forty minutes away, the internet barely works, and there would be nothing for me to do professionally. I'd also miss having friends close by, since nearly everyone my age has moved to the city. And if I'm honest, the quiet that feels so pleasant for two days would probably become lonely after two months. So for me it's the ideal place to visit, and that's partly because I get to leave again.
