Questions & Band 9 answers

In what situations do you use a computer or tablet?
Band 9 sample

My laptop is basically my office, so I'm on it for most of the working day — emails, spreadsheets, video calls. The tablet only comes out in the evening, when I want to read or watch something on the sofa. I keep the two fairly separate, which helps me switch off once work is done.

When was the first time you used a computer or tablet?
Band 9 sample

I think I was seven or eight. My father brought home a bulky second-hand desktop, and my brother and I were allowed half an hour each at the weekend. All we really did was draw wobbly pictures and play one very basic game, but at the time it felt like the most exciting machine in the world.

What would your life be like without computers or tablets?
Band 9 sample

Much slower, and I couldn't do my job at all, since practically everything I work on lives on a screen. On the other hand, I suspect I'd read more and sleep better. So professionally it would be a disaster, but personally I might not mind a few weeks of it.

In what conditions would it be difficult for you to use a computer or tablet?
Band 9 sample

Anywhere with bright sunlight, for a start — I once tried working on a beach and couldn't see a thing on the screen. A crowded bus isn't much better, as there's no room to type properly. And if the internet connection keeps dropping, I'd honestly rather give up and use a notebook.
